Prefilters are those lower cost and
lower efficiency filters that are installed in front of the more
expensive final filters to extend their life. Prefilters are also used by
themselves for low
efficiency applications.
Cardboard
Disposable Filters use either fiberglass,
polyester or carbon impregnated media to
capture visible dust in the air stream. Disposables come with
metal grille on two sides, metal grille one side or no metal grille.
Perhaps
the most popular filter in use today. The pleated filter offers
excellent prefilter efficiency, low pressure drop and high dust
holding capacity. It comes in 25%-30% (MERV 7), 35%-45% (MERV 8)
and 55%-60% (MERV 11) efficiencies as well as Economy, Standard and High Capacity (number of
pleats) constructions. There is also a carbon- impregnated media
for
odor control.
Constructed of two to four layers of polyester
filter media of various densities heat sealed around a wire
frame. Filter efficiency, dust holding and resistance can vary
depending on the denier (size) of the fiber or blends of fibers
used. Particularly effective in high moisture areas since there
is no cardboard frame.
